TACTILE SIGNS

The Norwegian Association of the Blind's requirements for signs.

- Signs should be placed at eye level, i.e. a center height of 150 cm.
- It must be possible to get right up to the sign. Therefore, no objects must be placed in front of the sign.
- For signs that can be walked right up to, smaller amounts of text should be designed with raised tactile letters and Braille.
- The raised tactile writing must have a tactility of at least 1 millimeter.
- The Braille should be placed so that it starts directly below where the tactile writing starts. That is, to the left of the sign.
- One will naturally start looking for the Braille during the start of the tactile writing.
- The Braille on signs must have a tactility of at least 0.6 millimeters.
- Signs placed against a light background should have a dark background with white or slightly faded text color.
- The luminance contrast between the text and the background on the sign, and between the sign and the back wall, must be at least 0.8.
- The font should be clean without serifs (feet), not italic and with raised tactile letters.
- Indoor signs must be illuminated with at least 300 lux.
- Signs should have a matte surface, as glossy surfaces cause annoying reflections and glare.
- Translucent signs must have light text on a dark background.
